Based on our approach, our âTrue Northâ was easy to define.  Translate sentences into words.

â          Win - Increase market share and differentiate our value leveraging our technology offerings

â          Innovate - Protect the integrity of our products by providing candid feedback to key business partners

â          Inform - Educate business partners and external clients through our ability to translate business needs into technology solutions

Selected four clear areas of focus.  Each assigned to a direct report.

• Employee Satisfaction

   

For each, your team member needs to develop a hypothesis.  You can establish metrics that tell a story, but get them to retrieve them.

Develop your high level action plan and list any unresolved issues. Then guide your direct to draw up an A3 template and create metric tracking system.

When serving as player-coach, be a point guard not a shooting guard.

Good news is we already had the groundwork done by pulling together a Mission and Vision statement.  You donât have to throw out work you have already done.

Based on our approach, our âTrue Northâ was easy to define.  Translate sentences into words.

Team âPodcastâ #1 went well.  8 minutes long seemed just right.  Team appreciated the brevity, and it forced me to not pile too many initiatives on my team in one week.  Recording was broken into three segments:  Key accomplishments from last week, focus for this week and events on the horizon.  Prevents general admin items from chewing up time in One on Ones and Team Calls.  Allows me to shrink the One on One time down from an hour to 30 minutes.  Keeps me focused too!

Keeping your teamâs knowledge management path focused is a huge challenge.  You have to know when to choose the great over the good.

Be prepared in the event of a Natural Disaster.  The time to plan is now, not later.  Lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina, applied to Tropical Storm Ernesto.

A rhetorical question - When is your feedback crossing the line when someone reporting to another leader breaks your teamwide policy?

Management Tactics

Trying an alternative to paper.  Using email as your one on one note taker.  File in appropriate folder, and can search using Google Desktop.  Caught it before I had too much on paper.

The IM experiment continues to yield huge dividends!

Itâs ALL about strategy this week!

So, when you start feeling down you have to tackle your problems head on, right?

How am I going after the data my boss wants and targeting unusable data?  Weâve scheduled a meeting for next week to define it!  Topics for the meeting include reviewing desired outputs (reports, dashboards, etc.), reviewing required data elements, reviewing sources for required data elements, reviewing options for data entry and tracking, and determining data entry tool, required fields, accountability and roll out plan.

How am I aiming to get consistent high performance out of my team?  Three steps â mid year review coaching on the questions they need to answer related to high performing behavior, asking ongoing questions that force the team to be thought leaders and maximize their potential, and then ensuring that accountability becomes part of our ongoing one on one conversations.

How am I going to attack a growing workload?  Short and long term efforts â short term involves assignment realignment and long term includes continuing the battle for additional resources.

How am I going to address my time management issues?  Iâm ensuring effective calendaring, but only after I get back from vacation.

Two nights on CPAP now.  Too early to tell long term, but I do feel a bit different today.

Sometimes you have to break an effort down into smaller components.  After finalizing our reengineering proposal, the feedback was, well, underwhelming to say the least.  A peer Director did not agree with the same outcome that I did, and my boss did not feel the document was effective at communicating what we wanted.  Needed to focus on three things:

• Define what happens today

   

• Define the requirements of the position

   

• Define what you want to change for tomorrow

   

I also had to split the urgent need (budget requests for headcount) from long term changes (team restructuring).  Result was shift in format (Word to PowerPoint), content (realignment to incremental headcount) and data (graphs matching business conditions to teamâs current state)

Preparing for Mid Year conversations.  Is assessment on your calendar?

Are you really a team, or just individuals who happen to report to the same leader?

Be careful who you blind copy your messages to!

Looking for ways to put individuals in the spotlight.

Delegation is hard, but pays dividends.  Examples this week include Expense Reports, sample data for a Vertical team and RFP support.

More conversation on Value.  This time we talk about four types of value from a Harvard Business Review article.  The categories include Tangible & Financial (both buyer and seller can quantify), Tangible & Non-Financial (buyer can quantify but seller has a harder time quantifying), Non-Tangible & Financial (seller can quantify but buyer has a harder time quantifying), and Non-Tangible & Non-Financial (both buyer and seller have a tough time quantifying, as you have to experience it to understand it).  We also talked about methods to quantify that value in hard dollars.

We discuss the next step in focusing on your role by talking about capturing what we do through the use of a Mind Map.  We then talk about the need to build a Business Plan for your position, outlining how our roles should be defined moving forward.

We talk about the need for performing the dreaded âtime studyâ, and why that data is so critical.

Bradley provides another viewpoint on lack of feedback from Direct Reports on your performance as a leader.
